What new parents actually need in the first year
In the first year, the things that get used constantly are teethers, comforters, bibs and feeding gear, bath and skincare, and name labels once childcare starts.
Stage by stage, roughly
| Stage | What gets used |
|---|---|
| 0 to 3 months | Bath and skincare, swaddles, muslins, soft comforters |
| 3 to 6 months | Teethers, sensory toys, bibs as drooling starts |
| 6 to 9 months | Feeding gear, spoons, snack cups, play toys |
| 9 to 12 months | Sturdier toys, bags, name labels as childcare approaches |
This is why shower gifts are often best sized past the newborn stage. That window is short and heavily oversupplied.
The quiet winners
Spare teethers. They get dropped, lost and sterilised constantly, and no parent has ever complained about having too many.
Waterproof name labels. Deeply unromantic, and a lifesaver once every bottle, lid and lunch box needs a name.
A named comforter. Often the thing the child will not sleep without, and the name helps it come home when it gets left somewhere.
Bath and skincare. It gets used up, so it can never be duplicated awkwardly.
On safety
Anything a baby holds goes straight into their mouth, so material matters more than looks. Our teethers and feeding items are BPA free, and our toys are painted with non toxic, heavy metal free paints. If you are buying elsewhere, check for the same.
The mistake most people make
Buying for your own taste rather than the baby's routine. A beautiful item that does not fit how the family lives will sit in a cupboard. When in doubt, choose the practical thing and put a name on it.
Quick answers
