Going to a full month celebration? A guide for guests
What the full month marks, why the date differs between families, and how to choose a keepsake for the baby when you are the guest.
What the full month marks
In Chinese traditions, a baby's full month celebration, also called manyue (满月) or full moon, marks the baby reaching about one month old. The Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations describes it as a milestone that families may share with relatives and friends, who may bring gifts for the baby.
Families do it differently. Some hold a large gathering, some a small family meal, and some do not hold one at all. Which day is chosen is the family's decision, so go by the date on the invitation rather than counting the days yourself.
Full month or hundredth day?
Some families mark the hundredth day instead of the full month. The Harmony Circle guide to birth customs describes that choice. If you are unsure which one you have been invited to, the invitation or the parents will tell you. The checklist below works for either.
Host gift boxes versus a guest's present
Two kinds of gift often appear at a full month celebration, and they travel in opposite directions.
- From the hosts to the guests. Some families give guests a thank you or food box to take home. The family arranges this.
- From the guests to the baby. Guests may bring a present for the baby or the parents. This is where a keepsake, clothing, a soft toy or a personalised piece fits.
If you are choosing a keepsake for the baby, focus on the second decision. Whether to bring a present or a red packet is a personal and family choice.
A checklist for guests
- Ask what would help. If you know the parents well, ask whether there is anything they need, or anything they already have plenty of.
- Get the name right. Only add a name the family has shared, and check the exact spelling with someone who knows.
- Decide alone or as a group. Coordinating one group gift can help avoid duplicates. Agree on the budget and on who places the order.
- Check the product details. Read the age guidance, the care instructions and the size of any clothing on each product page.
- Work back from the date. If a name is going on, count back from the celebration date using the processing time on the product page, plus delivery.
- Write the card. A line or two is enough. Borrow one from our gift card message ideas.
If several people contribute, agree whether the message should use individual names or a team name. Give one person responsibility for checking the spelling and the card wording before placing the order.
Not sure the name has been shared yet? Choose an unnamed piece or a ready made set, as you would for a baby shower.

Quick answers
What is a full month celebration?+
In Chinese traditions it marks a baby reaching about one month old, and it is also called manyue or full moon. Families choose how and when to celebrate, so follow the date on the invitation.
Is a hundredth day celebration the same thing?+
No. It marks a later milestone, and some families hold it instead of a full month celebration. A thoughtful present for the baby suits either.
Is the box the hosts give out the same as a guest's gift?+
No. A thank you or food box is something the hosts give guests to take home. A guest's gift goes the other way, to the baby or the parents. This guide focuses on a guest choosing the baby's present.
What if I do not know the baby's name yet?+
Leave the name off. Choose an unnamed piece or a ready made gift set and write a warm card instead. If you want a name on a later gift, ask the parents for the exact spelling first.
